The Hobby Lobby family invested $500 million into an incredible museum in Washington D.C.
The doors are almost 40 feet high, making it the largest brass gates in the world. And its based off of the first printed book in the world, the 1450 Gutenberg Bible.
Once you enter the symbolism is everywhere – from the marble floor symbolizing going from darkness to light, to the giant 140-foot-long ceiling LED screen that may mimic the Sistine Chapel. Even the elevators create an immersive video experience.
Floor 2 displays the Impact of the Bible, Floor 3 shares the Stories of the Bible, and Floor 4 displays the History of the Bible. Floor 6 will take you to the restaurant with its views of downtown DC.
I’ve been to the Museum several times and still have not fully experienced it – it is truly amazing and a great way to introduce people to the Bible – which is sadly needed in this post-Christian society.
I found it interesting to compare this to other museums in their portrayal of significant Biblical artifacts, such as the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser (the only known carving of an Israelite King, Jehu). The Creation Museum features a photograph in a panel, the Museum of the Bible features a cardboard cutout, the Oriental Institute and Harvard University’s Semitic Museum have a full scale replica, and the British Museum has the original.
But other than nitpicking like that, there’s no way to over emphasize the magnitude of this museum. This is a definite “can’t miss” stop on your tour of Washington D.C., and a place to spend the entire day.
My hat is tipped to the Green family for using the resources God has stewarded them with to spread His message.
