William Reed Newell was born on May 22, 1868, in Savannah, Ohio.  He pursued his undergraduate education at the College of Wooster in Ohio, graduating in 1891.  He then undertook theological studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and later Oberlin Seminary, preparing him for gospel ministry and teaching.

After his seminary studies, Newell became pastor of Bethesda Congregational Church in Chicago, Illinois.  During this period he distinguished himself by his vigorous commitment to Scripture and his desire to teach the Bible clearly and carefully.

Ministry at the Moody Bible Institute

In 1895, Newell accepted an invitation from Dwight L. Moody to join the Moody Bible Institute (MBI) in Chicago where he served as Assistant Superintendent under R. A. Torrey. At MBI, he proved himself a gifted expositor of Scripture, regularly leading large Bible classes in Chicago and later in other cities including Toronto and St. Louis.  His teaching emphasized verse-by-verse understanding of Scripture, and he rapidly developed a reputation for clarity, faithfulness, and a passion for the gospel.
