Although President Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, the tomb bears an art deco style, from the renovations done by the State of Illinois in the early 1930s. This tomb is the third and final resting place of Abraham Lincoln (the original is down the hill, where Lincoln was in the vault for a few months, the second is marked by a nearby marker). In addition to the President, his wife and three of his four children are buried here (Robert Todd – the only child to survive into adulthood, and the 20th century – is buried in Arlington National Cemetery).
Although Abraham Lincoln’s faith is often debated, his second inaugural address (found both in the Lincoln Memorial and inside this tomb), was “the most remarkably Christian public statement by any American president.”
