Mel Trotter Ministries is a Christian rescue mission located in Grand Rapids that serves individuals experiencing homelessness, hunger, and addiction. Founded in 1900, the ministry has grown from a small rescue mission into one of the largest faith-based outreach organizations in West Michigan.
The ministry traces its origins to the work of Melvin E. Trotter, a former alcoholic whose life was transformed after a religious conversion at the Pacific Garden Rescue Mission in Chicago in 1897. Three years later, civic leaders in Grand Rapids invited Trotter to establish a rescue mission in their city to address the growing problems of homelessness and addiction. Under his leadership, the Grand Rapids City Rescue Mission opened in 1900 and quickly became a center of Christian outreach and social assistance.
Today, Mel Trotter Ministries provides a wide range of services to those in need. These include emergency shelter, daily meals, addiction recovery programs, job training, medical and counseling services, and housing assistance. The organization seeks not only to meet immediate needs but also to help individuals rebuild their lives and achieve long-term stability.
The ministry also works closely with local churches, businesses, and community organizations to address homelessness in the region. In recent years, it has expanded its facilities and partnerships to offer more comprehensive care, including health services and transitional housing programs.
For more than a century, Mel Trotter Ministries has remained committed to its founding purpose—demonstrating Christian compassion while helping men, women, and families move from crisis toward hope and independence.
