Jack Wyrtzen (1904–1996), whose full name was Casper John “Jack” Wyrtzen, was a prominent American evangelist, radio broadcaster, and gospel musician whose ministry reached millions of people during the twentieth century. Best known as the founder of the radio program and ministry Word of Life Fellowship, Wyrtzen devoted his life to evangelism, youth outreach, and the teaching of the Bible.
Wyrtzen was born on April 22, 1904, in New York City. He grew up in a Christian home where music played an important role in family life. His father, a violinist, encouraged him to develop his musical abilities, and as a young man Wyrtzen became a skilled musician and singer. During the 1920s he performed in orchestras and on radio programs, gaining experience in the rapidly growing world of broadcast entertainment.
Despite his success in music, Wyrtzen felt a deep spiritual calling to evangelistic work. In 1931 he founded a Christian radio program called “Word of Life,” which combined gospel music with Bible preaching. The broadcast quickly gained a wide audience and eventually developed into the broader ministry known as Word of Life Fellowship. Through radio and public meetings, Wyrtzen shared a clear evangelical message that emphasized personal faith in Jesus Christ.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Wyrtzen expanded his work by organizing large youth rallies and evangelistic meetings in cities across the United States. Thousands of young people attended these gatherings, where Wyrtzen and other speakers presented the Christian message through preaching, music, and testimony. His emphasis on youth ministry reflected a growing awareness of the need to reach younger generations with the gospel.
One of Wyrtzen’s most lasting contributions was the establishment of the Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville in 1950. The institute was created to provide intensive biblical training for young men and women preparing for Christian service. Students studied Scripture, theology, and practical ministry while participating in evangelistic outreach.
Over time, Word of Life Fellowship expanded internationally, establishing camps, Bible institutes, and evangelistic programs in many countries. These ministries continued Wyrtzen’s original vision of combining strong biblical teaching with dynamic youth outreach.
Wyrtzen was also known for his love of gospel music and his belief that music could powerfully communicate the Christian message. Throughout his ministry he used choirs and musical programs as part of evangelistic services and radio broadcasts, helping popularize gospel music among evangelical audiences.
Jack Wyrtzen remained active in ministry for many decades, preaching, teaching, and guiding the work he had founded. His leadership helped shape Word of Life into a global ministry that continues to reach young people with the gospel.
He passed away on May 14, 1996, at the age of ninety-two. By that time, his influence had extended far beyond the radio programs and rallies that first brought him recognition.
Today Jack Wyrtzen’s legacy lives on through the worldwide ministries of Word of Life Fellowship. Through evangelism, youth camps, Bible training programs, and missionary outreach, the organization continues to carry forward his lifelong mission of sharing the message of Christ with new generations around the world.
