Near this spot was the boyhood home of Rev. Bob Jones, (1884-1968), D.D., L.L.D., internationally known evangelist and founder of Bob Jones University. The eleventh child of W. Alexander and Georgia Creel Jones, he was three months old when the family moved to Brannon Stand in 1884, where he lived until his father’s death in 1900. Four years after his conversion at the age of eleven, Bob Jones held his first revival under a brush arbor two miles from here.

The only structure remaining today from his boyhood home is the brick water well, located on Edinburgh Way just inside the Highland Oaks Golf Course entrance.

The boyhood home of Bob Jones Sr. offers a meaningful glimpse into the early life of a man who would go on to found Bob Jones University and become a major figure in American fundamentalist Christianity. Located in the rural South—near Dale County Alabama—this modest home reflects the environment that helped shape Jones’s personality, beliefs, and later influence.

Born in 1883, Bob Jones Sr. grew up in a region deeply rooted in Christian traditions. The American South at the time was characterized by strong church communities, revival meetings, and a culture that emphasized personal faith and moral discipline. These elements were not abstract influences for Jones; they were part of his daily life. His family and community reinforced values such as biblical authority, personal responsibility, and the importance of evangelism—principles that would later define both his preaching and his educational philosophy.

The home itself was simple, typical of late nineteenth-century Southern rural architecture. It was not a place of wealth or privilege, but rather one of modest means. This setting contributed to Jones’s lifelong identification with ordinary Americans and his ability to connect with audiences across social classes. His later success as an evangelist owed much to this background; he spoke in a direct, accessible style that resonated with people who recognized the world he came from.

Life in the Jones household revolved around faith and discipline. Family devotions, church attendance, and participation in community religious life were central to his upbringing. These routines instilled in him a sense of order and conviction that would later manifest in the codes of conduct he implemented at Bob Jones University. The emphasis on moral clarity and separation from worldly influences can be traced, in part, to the formative environment of his childhood home.

Education also played a role, though in a different form than what Jones would later create. Rural schooling in Alabama during this period was often limited in resources, yet it provided a foundation for literacy and public speaking. Jones demonstrated early talent in oratory, a skill he would refine and use to great effect in his evangelistic career. The combination of basic education and strong religious grounding proved to be a powerful influence on his development.

Today, the site of his boyhood home is recognized as a place of historical interest, particularly for those studying the rise of fundamentalism in the United States. It represents more than just a physical structure; it serves as a symbol of the cultural and religious forces that shaped one of the movement’s key leaders. Visitors and historians alike view the home as a starting point for understanding how Jones’s early experiences translated into a broader institutional vision.

That vision ultimately took form in the establishment of Bob Jones University, an institution designed to preserve and promote the kind of faith Jones had absorbed in his youth. The disciplined environment and emphasis on biblical authority can all be linked back to the values nurtured in his childhood surroundings.

In the end, the boyhood home of Bob Jones Sr. stands as a quiet yet powerful reminder of how early environments shape influential lives. From this modest beginning emerged a figure whose impact on religious education and American Christianity continues to be felt today.
