From his autobiography:
“Aside from the Bible, a few school text-books, and collections of song, I cannot recall a single volume of literature of any kind in our home, until my older brother and sisters grew up. My father was a subscriber to one weekly newspaper, which he would read and lend to some less fortunate neighbor. As the years went by and financial conditions improed, a small library of Fox’s ‘Book of Martyrs,’ Bunyan’s ‘Pilgrims’s Progress’ and such books were procured. I told my mother that some day I would write a song of my own, and I shall never forget her reply: ‘My boy,’ she said, ‘I would rather have you write a song that will help somebody, than see you President of the United States.’”

From Gantt Street Baptist Church:
Send the Light:
There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave, “Send the light! Send the light”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light!
Send the light!Chorus:
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!
When all my labors:
When all my labors and trials are o’er,
And I am safe on that beautiful shore,
Just to be near the dear Lord I adore
Will through the ages be glory for me.Refrain:
O that will be glory for me,
Glory for me, glory for me;
When by His grace I shall look at His face,
That will be glory, be glory for me.
I Stand Amazed in the Presence:
I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how he could love me,
A sinner, condemned, unclean.2. For me it was in the garden
He prayed, “Not my will, but thine.”
He had no tears for his own griefs,
But sweat drops of blood for mine.3. In pity, angels beheld him,
And came from the world of light
To comfort him in the sorrows
He bore for my soul that night.4. He took my sins and my sorrows,
He made them his very own;
He bore the burden to Calv’ry,
And suffered, and died alone.
