The Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary stands as a remarkable testament to one of the most influential preachers in Christian history and a living repository for scholars, ministers, and laypeople who value the preaching heritage of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Established to preserve Spurgeon’s library and legacy, the center has grown into a premier destination for theological study, historical research, and spiritual reflection.
The origins of this unique institution trace back to 2006, when Midwestern Seminary acquired Spurgeon’s personal collection of more than 6,000 volumes from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. These books, many of them annotated by Spurgeon himself, form the core of the library’s holdings and give visitors a direct window into the mind of the renowned preacher. In October 2015, after extensive planning and renovation, the seminary dedicated a specially designed space on its Kansas City campus to house the collection. This dedication marked the fulfillment of a long-held vision to celebrate Spurgeon’s life and ministry in a setting that would both preserve artifacts and inspire future generations.
More than a repository of books, the Spurgeon Library contains a remarkable array of artifacts from Spurgeon’s life, including his personal writing desk, preaching rail, and other memorabilia that speak to his daily rhythms of study and ministry. These physical reminders help visitors connect with Spurgeon not merely as a historical figure, but as a devoted pastor and theologian whose influence continues across denominational lines. In 2023 and 2024, the library expanded further with the acquisition of the Spurgeon Heritage Collection from Spurgeon’s College in the United Kingdom. This addition, which brought thousands of manuscripts, letters, sermons, and other historic items into the seminary’s care, made the Spurgeon Library the largest collection of Spurgeon materials in the world.
The library’s mission is both historical and practical. It preserves Spurgeon’s writings and personal effects so that scholars can engage deeply with his theology and preaching style, and so that pastors and students may be equipped for faithful ministry. Annual conferences, lectureships, scholarships, and research opportunities ensure that the collection serves not just as a museum, but as a living center of theological reflection and pastoral formation.
Spurgeon himself, often called the “Prince of Preachers,” was one of the most influential evangelical voices of the 19th century. His preaching at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London drew thousands and his written sermons were translated into dozens of languages. His commitment to biblical exposition, pastoral care, and evangelistic zeal has sustained his reputation across denominations and continents.
The legacy of the Spurgeon Library is therefore more than preservation. It is stewardship—an active care for a heritage of faith that shaped countless ministries and continues to influence Christian leaders today. By housing this vast collection, Midwestern Seminary safeguards not only historical materials but also the enduring value of disciplined study, heartfelt preaching, and gospel-centered life. In doing so, the library encourages those who enter its doors to look not merely at Charles Spurgeon, but beyond him to the truth and grace of the gospel he so passionately proclaimed.
